Pakistan Plastic Manufacturers Association (PPMA) Chairman Zafar Saeed has urged the government to impose ban on import of plastic scrap. Talking to newsmen on Friday, he said that due to import of huge quantity of plastic scrap the local recycling industry has refused to lift local plastic waste for recycling.

He said that local plastic industry could play an important role in the uplift of agriculture and environmental protection.

Giving examples of China, India and other countries, he said that these countries are using plastic for irrigation, green houses and packing purposes that can be done here as well. Zafar said that plastic containers could be used for preserving vegetables and fruits.

He said that huge quantity of vegetables and fruits goes waste annually due to non-existence or use of plastic containers for preserving perishable items.

He said that although Pakistan is the fifth largest producer of milk but it is still not able to export milk from the country. He emphasised the need of introducing plastic containers for preserving vegetables, fruits and milk. He said that plastic pipes can be used for irrigation and green plastic nets for green houses.

He said that per head consumption of plastic in Germany is around 85 kg per annum, in China 7 kg and in India and Pakistan it is 4 kg. He said that there are around 400 big and 10,000 small plastic units in the country.

He said that due to flourishing of automobile sector the plastic industry has registered a growth of 17 percent.
